Crypto moves at the speed of data.
In 2018, Dune was born from a simple truth: blockchain data was trapped in silos, accessible only to few with technical expertise. We asked, what if anyone could explore, query, and share crypto’s story? So we built dune.com — a home for curious minds to transform raw blockchain data into dashboards, stories, and answers.
Why dashboards?
Because crypto needed a lingua franca. Dashboards became the universal language for analysts, founders, and traders to collaborate. They turned fragmented data into shared insights: tracking a protocol’s growth, dissecting a hack, or predicting the next trend. Millions of users flocked to Dune, not just to find answers, but to ask questions they didn’t yet know how to voice.
But as our community grew, so did their ambitions.
Data teams began stitching Dune’s SQL API into their workflows, powering trading algorithms, risk models, and investor reports. They trusted us because Dune was built for scale: complex queries, massive datasets, battle-tested reliability. Yet, a refrain echoed: “This data is gold, but we need it faster. Realtime faster.”
The irony wasn’t lost on us. Crypto never sleeps. DeFi positions liquidate in seconds. NFTs mint in blocks. Memecoins rocket in milliseconds. Analytical engines, no matter how powerful, aren’t built for this. Teams were forced to choose: depth or speed.
We refuse to make them choose.
Sim isn’t a pivot—it’s an evolution.
When thousands of your users whisper the same problem, you shout the solution. In November 2024, we announced the beta release of our developer platform, codenamed Echo. The response was thunderous. Data engineers replaced clunky workarounds with elegant API calls. Product teams integrated live blockchain state into apps. Developers now had a highway, not a hiking trail, to build on.
Today, Echo becomes Sim—a tribute to sim.io, the realtime engine from smlXL, whose acquisition supercharged our vision. Sim isn’t just a tool; it’s a paradigm shift. Expect more big news in the coming months.

Making crypto data accessible
Dune’s mission is to make crypto data accessible. We’ve done a heck of a job on that front for data teams, curious individuals, and innovators by building dune.com, the most widely used data platform in crypto. But accessibility isn’t just for analysts—it’s for builders at scale. Today, we’re advancing our mission by also empowering developers, enterprises, and institutions with world-class infrastructure.
From fast-moving startups to Fortune 500 companies, from DeFi pioneers to TradFi institutions and government organizations, teams trust Dune because our data doesn’t just inform—it transforms. We’re excited to partner with the engineering counterparts of the thousands of data teams who reach for Dune for analytics. This time, to build the next generation of apps in crypto.
Please welcome Sim to the Dune family of products. We’re here to build.
